The same raised bed in January-a taste to come?

2009_01097jan20090013

This picture of the raised bed( shown in the previous post) illustrates just how hardy the plants appear to be.

The lowest temp recorded in the bed in January ,was minus 13.No cover -as  snows  indicates .

This freeze went on for weeks, and in the spring ALL pots were o.k. and plants survived as did the grower, very concerned at what the end result might be.Equally determined to survive was the resident family of   greenfly. How they did I am not sure.

As one of the types from which the  garden pansy was bred, grows in the Pyrenees , it is perhaps  not surprising that pansies are so hardy in the uk.

Think of the winter flowering type which millions of people use world wide to enliven the dark days of this season,as an example.
